Sustainability and transparency are incredibly important in the construction sector. At Polydeck, we are pleased to announce the publication of new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for several of our core product ranges, including POLYplank, POLYPost and our Handrail systems.

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified document that provides transparent, standardised information about the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifecycle.

EPDs are created using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and are developed in accordance with internationally recognised standards such as EN 15804 and ISO 14025.

In simple terms, an EPD measures the environmental footprint of a product from its raw material extraction and manufacturing, through to transportation, installation and end-of-life disposal or recycling.

EPDs allow teams to:

  • Compare products using independently verified environmental data
  • Support sustainable procurement decisions
  • Contribute towards BREEAM and other environmental assessment schemes
  • Improve carbon reporting accuracy
  • Increase transparency across the supply chains

EPDs are independently verified by third parties, ensuring the data is credible, consistent and trustworthy.

Polydeck’s Commitment to Sustainable Manufacturing

Since opening in 2001, Polydeck has specialised in manufacturing high-performance GRP anti-slip products, bridges, boardwalks and planks.

A key feature of many Polydeck products is the use of a structural foam core manufactured from 100% recycled plastic bottles, encapsulated within a durable GRP outer layer.

The products are manufactured using closed mould technology to achieve a long service life of up to 75 years, and our latest EPDs demonstrate Polydeck’s ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impact through the use of recycled materials, long-life product design, renewable energy procurement, waste-to-energy recovery during manufacturing and durable low-maintenance products designed for long-term performance.

POLYplank

The POLYplank EPD covers our anti-slip plank system designed to replace traditional timber planks in pedestrian applications. The product combines a GRP outer layer with a recycled PET foam core and incorporates an integral anti-slip aggregate finish.

Key environmental highlights include:

  • Manufactured using electricity sourced from 100% wind power
  • Made using recycled PET bottle foam
  • Designed service life of 75 years
  • GWP-total (A1-A3): 38.58 kg CO2e

POLYPost

The new POLYPost EPD covers Polydeck’s timber-effect post system manufactured using recycled plastic bottle foam encapsulated in GRP.

Key environmental highlights include:

  • 100% biomass-powered renewable electricity used in manufacturing
  • 75-year reference service life
  • Secondary material input of 6.13%
  • GWP-total (A1-A3): 18.5 kg CO2e

Handrail

The Handrail EPD covers Polydeck’s GRP handrail system, available in multiple colours and timber-effect finishes.

Key environmental highlights include:

  • Manufactured using renewable wind-powered electricity
  • Incorporates structural foam made from recycled PET bottles
  • Designed for a 75-year service life
  • GWP-total (A1-A3): 24.7 kg CO2e
