Project Aim and Challenges
The Spindlestone Bridge reconstruction project involved the complete replacement of an existing bridge over the Waren Burn in Northumberland.
Located near Budle Bay and Bamburgh, the bridge provides an important local route and was identified for replacement as part of Northumberland County Council’s programme of bridge improvement works.

A specialist solution within a wider project
Polydeck is often associated with complete bridge and boardwalk solutions, but our GRP products can also be supplied individually to form part of a wider project.
For Spindlestone Bridge, the requirement was for durable posts and rails to be incorporated into the new structure. GRP was selected for its suitability in exposed outdoor environments and its long-term performance. Unlike timber, GRP will not rot or decay, while also avoiding the corrosion issues associated with steel. This helps reduce ongoing maintenance requirements and makes it a practical choice for bridge infrastructure
The Project
The Outcome
The rebuilt Spindlestone Bridge was completed and reopened to traffic in July 2026, restoring an important local route across the Waren Burn.
The new bridge incorporates Polydeck GRP posts and rails, providing a durable, low-maintenance solution designed to withstand the challenges of an exposed outdoor environment for decades to come.
The project also highlights the flexibility of Polydeck’s GRP range. While we often supply complete bridge and boardwalk solutions, our products can also be specified and supplied individually for use within larger construction and infrastructure projects.
